| 973-9 - Herschell Spillman -
$2900
The charming simplicity of the early carousel figures, revealing their
descent from the children's rocking horse, is exemplified in this circa
1910 outside row jumper from the North Tonawanda carousel factory of Herschell
Spillman. An upraised head with alert smiling face carried on an uplifted
neck, nicely carved swirling mane tendrils, and understated trappings
including a rippled blanket, bordered breastband and simple saddle with
painted embellishments characterize this era of manufacture. An older
restoration in good condition - the horse is ivory white with grey mane
and harnessed with trappings in shades of blue, aqua, pink and silver
- glass eyes and a natural horsehair tail. 51 long x 50 high, 36 chest
to rump. 36 body.
