910-1 - Charles Carmel - $7,500
Circa 1919 carousel horse from the Brooklyn, NY carving shop of Charles
Carmel. The all wood horse is in the jumping position with an arched neck,
a sensitive face with glass eyes, an open mouth with lolling tongue and
a natural horsehair tail. Lavishly decorated in the classic Coney Island
style mastered by its carver, the horse presents in richly colored old
park paint in a palette of red, gold, silver, brown and green decorating
the golden tan body. Trappings include a carved and fringed breastband
overlaid with a fringed treasure pouch, a saddle with tassels resting
on a fringed fish scale blanket, and lappetted and tasseled
crupper straps. Stirrups and step-ups included. In good condition with
some seam separation and losses to paint commensurate with age and use.
52 long x 46 high, 40 chest to rump.
