910-1 - Charles Carmel - $7,500
Circa 1919 carousel horse from the Brooklyn, NY carving shop of Charles Carmel. The all wood horse is in the jumping position with an arched neck, a sensitive face with glass eyes, an open mouth with lolling tongue and a natural horsehair tail. Lavishly decorated in the classic Coney Island style mastered by its carver, the horse presents in richly colored old park paint in a palette of red, gold, silver, brown and green decorating the golden tan body. Trappings include a carved and fringed breastband overlaid with a fringed treasure pouch, a saddle with tassels resting on a fringed “fish scale” blanket, and lappetted and tasseled crupper straps. Stirrups and step-ups included. In good condition with some seam separation and losses to paint commensurate with age and use. 52 long x 46 high, 40 chest to rump.
