810-13 - Armitage Herschell - $3,200
c.1895 - In the unadorned country fair style of the earliest carousels this figure from the Armitage-Herschell carousel factory in North Tonawanda, New York was created for a portable steam driven track machine before the invention of the overhead crank jumping mechanism and retains its iron track mount-—therefore it has no through pole. The horse is in the jumping position and displays a pleasant face, an upright neck with carved tendrilled mane, a breastband with painted stars and carved lozenge decoration encompassing the chest. A simple floating saddle having a carved floral motif within a lozenge on the cantle rests on a painted and carved decorated saddle blanket. The horse presents in nicely patinated paint with brown, green and red trappings enhanced with metallic gold. Glass eyes, carved shoes and natural horsehair tail; good condition. 44 long x 40 high, 30 chest to rump.
