755-5 - Bungarz - $8,000
Rare Early Striding Tiger, Circa 1880's Gottfried Bungarz, Brooklyn, NY. Although his surviving carousel figures are rare, Gottfried Bungarz was a well-known and highly respected carousel manufacturer in the 1880's and 90's. A German émigré, he established the Bungarz Steam Wagon and Carousele Works at 125,127 Ninth St. & 2nd Ave in Brooklyn. In 1885, he obtained a patent for a "Roundabout." Several of his carousels were placed around Coney Island. For more information of Gottfried Bungarz, see Fred Fried's Pictorial History of the Carousel, pp. 80-81, and p. 145 for examples of Bungarz figures.  Also see the NCA's publication Merry-Go-Roundup, Winter 1996. Older restoration, 57" long x 36" high.
